Inconsistency in the Natural: A Spiritual Deficiency?
Have You Found Yourself Inconsistent?
Maybe you set a goal to lose weight, start a podcast, or get your finances in order. You had the excitement to begin, but couldn’t follow through. The ups and downs—starting, stopping, failing—leave you asking, “What am I missing?”
It could be that God is trying to get your attention—not just about your plans, but about your posture. He may be pointing to something deeper: your spirituality.
Separating the “Spiritual” From the “Practical”
Many of us live as though God is only needed for the “big” or “spiritual” things. We pray about ministry, relationships, or healing, but leave out what we think are everyday matters—like eating better, getting organized, or making wise financial decisions.
In doing so, we unintentionally lean on our own strength. We plan without prayer. We act without asking, “Where is God in this?”
God Resists the Proud
“God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.” – James 4:6 (KJV)
There’s a principle here that’s easy to overlook: when we live independently of God, even in the small things, we’re walking in pride.
What is pride?
Thinking too highly of ourselves
Arrogance or self-reliance
Presuming we can do life without God's guidance
It’s presumptuous to think we can do anything without God—especially when even our next breath depends on Him.
“We Can Do Nothing of Ourselves”
This isn’t just a verse to quote—it’s truth we must live by. We need God’s wisdom, direction, and grace in everything.
“I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.” – John 15:5 (KJV)
Even in areas we consider “natural” or “non-spiritual,” success comes through our abiding in Him.
What True Humility Looks Like
Humility is more than being quiet or low-key. It’s a lifestyle of dependence on God.
“Humility is the state or quality of being humble of mind or spirit; the absence of pride or self-assertion. It is to bring down low, to lower in condition, rank or position, and to abase oneself. Humility is being lowly in mind, abasing the pride, and making oneself meek and submissive to the divine will of God.”
When we believe that we have nothing without God, we begin to include Him in everything. We stop assuming and start asking. We stop moving without direction and start waiting for His voice.
God Wants Relationship—Not Self-Sufficiency
God wants a relationship with His children—not self-sufficient adults. Children come to their parents because they know they can’t do for themselves.
When we approach God with that same dependency, we invite His grace into every area of our lives.
If we don’t, He will lovingly resist us. Not to hurt us—but to humble us, to bring us back to Him.
Final Thought: Embrace the Childlike Heart
So if you’ve been wrestling with inconsistency, maybe the issue isn’t discipline—it’s distance. God isn’t asking you to try harder. He’s asking you to draw closer.
Embrace being a child again in His eyes. Let go of self-reliance. Invite Him into the “little” things—and you’ll see just how powerful His grace really is.
